Where Is It? – Cataloging Software for Data Management
Keeping track of all the data you store on your hard drive, removable drives, network drives, USB sticks, CDs, DVDs, and so on can prove to be a bit of a hassle. Imagine searching for a document you know you have stored somewhere on a drive, then spending the good part of an hour searching for it. I get anxious just thinking about such a scenario.
Luckily enough, you need only get the right piece of software and such a scenario can be easily avoided. The right piece of software is Where Is It. As the application’s name so adequately points out, it will help you by providing and answering the question bugging you: where is that document I’ve been searching for?
Here is a more in-depth look at how Where Is It? works: it creates a catalog of all the data stored on various drives (hard drive, network drive, removable drive) and storage devices (CDs, DVDs, USB sticks). If you’re familiar with the DOS program Floppy Master, then you should know that Where Is It? is basically like that – just leaps and bounds better.
The program is very simple to install and supports almost any version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It takes up about 4 MB of hard disk space and it's gentle with the system resources.
The interface of Where Is It? seems a bit complicated, especially for a beginner, but spending a few moments with it will make him get familiar with the program's options. The first time the user launches Where Is It?, he will be prompted with a wizard, asking him to go through a series of steps for configuring the program's functionality. After completing this, the user can simply select a partition, for which an image will be created, containing all the partition's files and folders. This way, the user will have everything well organized and finding a certain file will not take long.
All the scanned information can be displayed in Where Is It? using various criteria, like file name, space occupied, date when it was created and so on. All the cataloged files can be saved, to be reused in case the program is reinstalled.
Pros:
It allows the user to easily organize all his files and folders stored on the hard disk. Besides that, this information can be displayed using various settings. Furthermore, cataloged data can be saved as a single catalog file.
Cons:
The large amount of settings may confuse a first time user.
Where Is It? is the perfect software for easily and quickly cataloging all the files and folders stored on a hard disk.
